The "Home" is situated near to the "Periyar Wild-Life Park" on the border between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The regional languages are predominantly Tamil and Hindu although in the past much of the teaching was in English.
The area is one of tea and coffee plantations and Spice Gardens. Although near to the equator the climate is equable and water supply is adequate.
The major employment in the area is in the tea and coffee plantations and spice gardens. Many of these are still owned by such well known British firms as Rowntrees, Cadbury's and Brook Bond.
Increasingly service industries and tourism are developing. Market traders and local craftsmanship offers some employment opportunities.
